Darfur Crisis Relief & Development:
The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (the Movement), a global network of 97 million volunteers in 185 countries. During humanitarian emergencies, the Movement is uniquely positioned to save lives and provide assistance to those affected by crises. Your gift to the American Red Cross will support the Movement’s emergency relief efforts to those affected by the Darfur crisis, through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ (Federation) operations in both Sudan and Chad.
Serving as the Movement’s lead in areas of armed conflict, the ICRC has access to civilians and combatants and has been working since 2003 to deliver emergency services to those directly affected by the crisis in Darfur. As the stewards of International Humanitarian Law, the ICRC also reaches out to all sides in the conflict to remind them of the rights of civilians. So far this year, the ICRC has delivered food aid to an average of 177,000 people per month, delivered more than 19,000 Red Cross messages between those separated by the conflict, and reunited 36 families. The ICRC continues its appeals to combatants to protect civilians and stop abuses of International Humanitarian Law.
The Federation continues to manage two refugee camps in Eastern Chad for 45,000 people, with a focus on health services, provision of food and essential household items, and water and sanitation programs.
International Response Fund:
Poverty and war. Famine and drought. Earthquakes and flooding. Displacement and disease. In the last decade, almost two billion people around the world have been affected by disasters and are in great need. The American Red Cross is there to help and relies upon the generosity of the American public to support our global relief efforts by making gifts to the International Response Fund.
You can help those affected by countless crises around the world each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance, and other support to help those in need.
